Niagara, ON (June 2009) - Picasso’s Salon Spa and Hernder Estates Wines joined forces once again to support The Walker Family Cancer Centre by hosting the 4th Annual Soiree Makeover Gala ’09 on Saturday, May 30th. Proceeds from the event are part of a $250,000 commitment by the Hernder Picasso’s Foundation towards bringing state-of-the-art cancer care to the Niagara Region.
Inspired by family, friends and clients who have battled this disease, event organizers Mario Arghittu, along with his partners Joe and Frank Gallo of Picasso’s and members of the Hernder family decided to take up the cause. By using their combined areas of expertise, the idea for the Soiree Makeover Gala took shape in 2005. Four years later, the Gala has grown into a highly anticipated event that draws more than 650 guests. Highlights of the evening included wine sampling and makeover judging, hors d’oeuvres and food stations, a silent auction, live jazz band, and a presentation by Picasso’s own creative team.
The evening’s festivities also included the launch of a 2009 special edition sparkling wine, simply named ‘Blue’, the sales of which will help toward Hernder Picasso’s Foundation’s pledge to the new Cancer Centre.
‘Blue’ is the second in a series of wines released specifically to help the Foundation in its attempt to improve cancer care. The intention of ‘Blue’ is to raise awareness of prostate cancer, and follows the 2008 issue of ‘Pink’—appropriately named to highlight awareness of breast cancer. Five dollars from the sale of every bottle of these VQA wines will be directed to the new regional Cancer Centre.
(Niagara wine-watchers can look forward to a third Hernder Picasso’s Foundation offering coming in Fall 2009—a Riesling that will be adopted as the official wine of the It’s Our Time Campaign.)
As for the connection between wine and fighting cancer, the Hernder family responds…”In the bible wine is used to symbolize life. Many years ago it was used for health remedies. So we asked ourselves "Why couldn’t wine be used for that same purpose today?"
And so, the themes of beauty and wine blended perfectly for a sparklingly successful event enjoyed by all. Niagara Health System representatives Debbie Sevenpifer, Mark Sherk and Bill Hallett were in attendance to convey thanks to the many organizers and volunteers whose passion made the evening possible.
