Niagara-on-the-Lake Campaign Team in Full Swing

St. Lawrence Seaway

Niagara-on-the-Lake Campaign Team Co-chairs Donna Scott (far right) and Jim Garrett (far left) gratefully accept a cheque from Ken Slingerland of the Kinsman Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake with Doug Hernder looking on.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake team of the It’s Our Time Campaign hosted an Open House at the Pillar and Post on December 14th, 2009 to give members of the community an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the new hospital and Walker Family Cancer Centre being built in St. Catharines.  When complete in early 2013, the new hospital will serve the residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Thorold and surrounding areas.

Representatives from the Niagara Health System, Plenary Group and PCL Constructors Canada Inc. were on hand to provide information on the construction and features of this remarkable new facility.  Attendees also heard about initiatives for training and recruitment of medical professionals, adding to the benefits of the physical structure.  To add perspective on the impact on patients, St. Catharines resident, Lesley Osmond spoke movingly on her personal experience battling cancer and the impact that a local cancer centre would have on people struggling with this disease.

Construction of the new 970,000 square foot building is well underway at First Street and Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines.  The state-of-the-art facility will be one of the most up-to-date in the province and offer new programs not previously offered within the region.  Each year, 67,000 Niagara area residents must travel out of the region to receive care related to cancer, heart disease and mental illness.  Thankfully, many of these patients will soon be spared the need to leave the area for care.

Anyone interested in donating, learning more, or volunteering with the Niagara-on-the-Lake Team should contact Donna Scott, 905-468-4751 or Jim Garrett, 905-468-8575.
