IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE In recent years, there have been many significant investments across Niagara Health System sites - new diagnostic equipment such as CT Scanners, MRIs and ultrasound machines; two new Ontario Breast Screening Program clinics; two new Emergency Departments and two Ambulatory Care Centres; and the celebrated opening of the new 12,500 sq. ft. 24-station Welland Hospital Auxiliary Dialysis Centre in June 2008. In April 2009, we celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Healthcare Complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre. The project is progressing on budget and on schedule, with construction more than eighty percent complete! The building will be weather-tight by this winter, marking a significant milestone in the project's evolution. Highly detailed work has moved to the inside of the building, including carpentry and painting. With this increased level of detail, there are now over 700 skilled trades workers onsite daily - eighty five percent of which are sourced locally. Beyond construction, the NHS is focusing on the work needed to transform the building into a functioning hospital. This includes purchasing equipment for installation next summer in advance of construction wrapping up in November, 2012. Following a few months of training and orientation, the new health complex is expected to open for patient care in the spring of 2013. The $759-million, state-of-the-art building with 980,000 square feet of space dedicated to the needs of patients and clinical staff will set a new standard of patient care and address the urgent need for local health-care services for the treatment of cancer, mental illness, cardiac and kidney diseases.
